Choosen Issue : Anorexia

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by immoderate food restriction and irrational fear of gaining weight, as well as a distorted body self-perception. It typically involves excessive weight loss and usually occurs more in females than in males.[1] Because of the fear of gaining weight, people with this disorder restrict the amount of food they consume. This restriction of food intake causes metabolic and hormonal disorders.[2] Outside of medical literature, the terms anorexia nervosa and anorexia are often used interchangeably; however, anorexia is simply a medical term for lack of appetite, and people with anorexia nervosa do not in fact, lose their appetites.[3] Patients suffering from anorexia nervosa may experience dizziness, headaches, drowsiness and a lack of energy.
Anorexia nervosa is characterized by low body weight, inappropriate eating habits, obsession with having a thin figure, and the fear of gaining weight. It is often coupled with a distorted self image[4][5] which may be maintained by various cognitive biases[6] that alter how the affected individual evaluates and thinks about her or his body, food and eating.[7] Those suffering from anorexia often view themselves as "too fat" even if they are already underweight.[8] They may practice repetitive weighing, measuring, and mirror gazing, alongside other obsessive actions to make sure they are still thin, a common practice known as "body checking".[9]
Anorexia nervosa most often has its onset in adolescence and is more prevalent among adolescent females than adolescent males.[10] However, more recent studies show the onset age has decreased from an average of 13 to 17 years of age to 9 to 12.[11] While it can affect men and women of any age, race, and socioeconomic and cultural background,[12] anorexia nervosa occurs in ten times more females than males.[13]
People with anorexia nervosa continue to feel hunger, but they deny themselves all but very small quantities of food.[7] The average caloric intake of a person with anorexia nervosa is 600–800 calories per day, but extreme cases of complete self-starvation are known. It is a serious mental illness with a high incidence of comorbidity and similarly high mortality rates to serious psychiatric disorders.[8] People suffering from anorexia have extremely high levels of ghrelin (the hunger hormone that signals a physiological need for food) in their blood. The high levels of ghrelin suggests that their bodies are desperately trying to make them hungry; however, that hunger call is being suppressed, ignored, or overridden. Nevertheless, one small single-blind study found that intravenous administration of ghrelin to anorexia nervosa patients increased food intake by 12–36% over the trial period.[14]
The term anorexia nervosa was established in 1873 by Sir William Gull, one of Queen Victoria's personal physicians.[15] The term is of Greek origin: an- (ἀν-, prefix denoting negation) and orexe (όρεξη, "appetite"), thus meaning a lack of desire to eat.[16] However, while the term "anorexia nervosa" literally means "neurotic loss of appetite", the literal meaning of the term is somewhat misleading. Many anorexics do enjoy eating and have certainly not lost their appetites as the term "loss of appetite" is normally understood; it is better to regard anorexia nervosa as a compulsion to fasting, rather than a literal loss of appetite.

initial ideation and conceptualization

DESIGN

Initial Ideation

Conceptualization.
To me ulek mayang is a graceful dance but it has a story behind it and that's the main point why I choose ulek mayang instead of other traditional malay dance. The target audience is youth and adult because it suitable for them to look rather than kids. okay, for the background color, I might put gold and sea blue. I put gold because its royalty color for malay and some people believe the 7 princess wear a beautiful traditional costume in gold and the accessory also in gold. For the sea-blue is because the 7 princess comes from sea. So, the purpose of this design, I want to make the audience feel the graceful of the princess yet creepy of the story. lets say 2 in 1.

ART

So, for the art..I draw the music note. actually the background is creepy but I didn't know how to draw perfectly. its just a sketch. okay...my statement about this art is I draw a mucis note and the creepy background because I heard a story, its true story... if we sing the ulek mayang song completely, the singer will be hit by the spirit of ulek mayang. they said that the 7 princess come and sing the ulek mayang song while dance and go to the person that sing the song, and the person will possesed.

Traditional dance from Malaysia

Assalamualaikum
Hi ! okay...for the traditional dance from Malaysia, we both choose Ulik Mayang, an history dance from Terengganu.

History about Ulik Mayang :
The Ulek Mayang is said to have its origin in an ancient tale about a sea-princess who fell in love with a fisherman. The princess abducted the fisherman's soul, leaving his body unconscious. His friends entreated a bomoh (shaman) to heal him. When the bomoh conducted the healing ritual to bring the fisherman's soul back, the princess appeared and responded by calling on five of her sisters to her aid. The battle between the bomoh and the six princesses continued until the seventh and the eldest princess appeared and put an end to it.
"I know your origins,” says the eldest princess, and she commands everyone, "Let those from the sea to return to the sea, and those from the land to return to the land."
The grateful bomoh and the fisherman’s friends present the princess with coloured rice as an offering to the spirits of the sea. This practice, along with the Ulek Mayang dance, continued until the Islamic revival movement of recent decades.

why we choose ulek mayang?
We choose this traditional dance because of their dance and the costume. The dance actually is for spiritual. The element of the dance, gentle for the 1st song but when the song came to corus it become faster but still gentle. so, the dance is gentle and beutiful. And for the costume, I kinda like it because every 7 princess wear traditional crown and when they dance they will hold the cloth for the start dance until the end of the dance.

The difference between ulik mayang and other traditional dance, is because of the song. some people believe if we sing the complete lyric of ulek mayang song, they will came haunting he/she  that sing the song and he/she will exposed beams. Thats why, if we look the lyric the princess 3 and 5 didn't mention. people didn't want to put the complete lyric because they afraid something will happen to someone that sing the song completely.

Media Artist

Christine Mcphee

Christina McPhee born 1954, Los Angeles California is an American painter, new media and video artist. She currently lives on California's central coast and San Francisco.
Christina McPhee works in drawing as a core practice, developing layered works that move from the paper into video and photo montage. Her work is concerned with psychogenerative landscapes and bioassemblage. In media arts, she moves scientific visualization into alternative maps based around site-specific observation. Her drawings involve linear, fugue-like structures that become topologic fields. We choose her because of her creativity in photo montage. Most of her artworks in photo montage are really abstract and have a lot of meanings behind her artworks.

This is one example from her artwork that we like most. This artwork called double-blind photo montage.

We choose her because of her drawing style. She use black and white color on this artwork. When we saw this artwork, we feel creepy because of its color and stress on the line and shape. We like the arrangement of the single image on that artwork really abstract and attract our eyes.
